iPad’s Apps are functionally better layout

We talk a fair bit about the tablet wars and for me a lot of people are hoping that Android or Chrome or Meego beat the crap out of Apple.

What we are seeing currently are more functional tablet delivered from Apple and likely most notable Windows 7 based tablets.

The SDK provided by both Android and Apple allows you to format it easily for tablets.

But we are not seeing a lot of Android software developers do that.

Take a look at iElectribe which enables the users to synthesize music on the iPad

Korg is known for many things in the music industry, not the least of which is the company’s synth tech. Korg recently decided to dive into the Apple app store with iElectribe, a digital version of the company’s Electribe series of rhythm synthesizer. Does it stack up? If our experience is anything to go by, then you bet it does.

iElectribe offers up 64 pre-set patterns ranging in genre from House to Hardcore, which allow the user to get up and going without having to create anything from scratch. The application also has 32 templates in a similarly large range of genres; this gives a basic framework which, with a little work, can turn into some pretty elaborate beats. For those who want total control, iElectribe has 64 user banks that have nothing more than a single synth trigger on the downbeat of each measure. You can load or write to any of these files using the browser functionality located underneath the application’s faux LCD.

Korg gives you eight basic sounds to work with, including a handful of synths, an open and closed hi-hat, a cymbal, and a clap/snare that can be toggled by changing the waveform. Eight sounds might not seem like much, but with the software’s ability to manipulate sounds at the most basic of levels, the number of sounds that can be created is almost limitless.

We need more apps like this on the Android and Meego

Why iOS’s Facetime will spread the use of video conferencing

Now here is my view on why facetime could be the push to bring more users to adopt video conferencing.

Till today, video  conferencing have been limited to desktop computers. Skype have been the game changer so far bring video conferencing to the masses from what seem traditionally used specific for corporate meetings.

Facetime could win because:

    • It is easy to set up. You practically don’t need to as you can immediately choose to video conference with someone. No complex configurations.

      • The process is simple. When you call someone you’ll see an on-screen FaceTime icon. You can tap it, and the other person, assuming they are on Wi-Fi and have an iPhone 4, will get an invitation. If he or she accepts you’ll be chatting in just a few seconds.
      • It is a built in feature. Unlike a Skype or Qik app you might need to download it or purchase then download it. There is little hassle in this and human beings does not really like to evaluate much.

If you offer someone a value added feature like this, charge them through your hardware (zero additional charges) and make the process easy and smooth, you could have a winner here.

An Office App that does Word and Excel on the iPad :Office² HD

Now here is a good breakdown by Mobility Site on a rather interesting office app called Office HD.

What i like about it is that it can assess and save documents that you have in cloud storage such as

      1. Dropbox
      2. Box.net
      3. Mobile Me
      4. Google Docs

Now the good thing is that i can envision me doing alot of productive work on the iPad. Most of my documents are stored at 1,2,4 really so this application will be interesting.

I blog abit on using QuickOffice [review here >>], which essentially enables me to assess, create and save documents on my iPhone

Whats the pet peeve? Doing Excel! How can you perform excel on a 3.5 inch!

Thats where a 10 inch comes in.

Android 2.2 Froyo Looks like a Game Changer:iPhone watch out!

Google just announce to developers what are the features that will be park of Android 2.2 Froyo and I must say that almost all the features and enhancements are good enough to compete with iPhone Ecosystem.

Speed  – The New Dalvik JIT Compiler

This was announce some time ago that it could speed up the processing and the just in time processing of the apps on the phone by 2 times to 5 times.

This is the most awesome announcement out of all the announcement.

I am a user of iPod Touch and my decision to not get an Android or a WM 6.5 device was mainly because their apps do not run as appealing or as well as fast and smooth as the apps on iPhone.

When i scroll up and down my app that takes up CPU, when i zoom in and out it takes up background processing as well.

iPhone does an awesome job on this. And they are using a much weaker CPU than most of the SnapDragon Android Phones.

Google Android needs to get it that people continue to use the iPhone because they have never had a device that experience no lag! That is one of the subtle things that keep people to use the iPhone

On most Android devices i see and with more background apps running, this lag will occur and if Android can address this lag issues with the Dalvik Compiler than it is something that can swing me to testing out this platform.

Android Cloud to Device Messaging – Push Messaging Made Easy?

Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) is a service that helps developers send data from servers to their applications on Android devices. The service provides a simple, lightweight mechanism that servers can use to tell mobile applications to contact the server directly, to fetch updated application or user data. The C2DM service handles all aspects of queueing of messages and delivery to the target application running on the target device.

This could potentially spawn off alot of good cloud apps on the platform. This is like the Push Notification for the iPhone, where your app server will be able to update your phone via this Google Cloud Application service.

      App Backup and Restore

This is good. This will enable applications such as To Do List to be able to backup the data to a server through this known service and restore it from the cloud.

If this is what i am getting from the explanation. On the fly back and restore for specific app is another subtle gain changer.

Move App from Memory to SD Card

Abit like copying what Microsoft did with SD Card app installation. I personally don’t like such a feature as there is no control over the apps for a person managing their handphone

      Portable HotSpot and Tethering!

I wrote alot about how you can turn your smartphones into wifi routers and Android came up with such a great inbuilt feature. Wifi Router software used to be very expensive and with this feature, you will not need to get one!

Android Market App Auto Update and Update All

This is another subtle game winner for iPhone. Alot of geeks don’t get why this feature is so big, but to us normal folks i don’t want to go somewhere and re-download an application or worry about it overriding my current data.

The Auto Update can be self destructive but Update All is a very good feature.

      Full least of enhancements

      • Speed
      • App data backup
      • Improved Enterprise / Exchange Support
      • Push services – “Android Intent”
      • Tethering / Mobile Hotspot
      • Much faster browsing experience – V8 in browser
      • New functionality in browser- Camera, orientation, geolocation
      • Support for Adobe Flash and Adobe Air
      • Search the Android Marketplace directly from Quick Search
      • The ability to install applications on the SD card automatically
      • One-button update or automatic update for apps
      • The ability to purchase music from Android Marketplace
      • The ability to stream your own music from your desktop

Quickoffice Suite allows you to edit documents, spreadsheets in Google Docs, Box.net and Dropbox on the iPhone

      Qocms_1

Folks who have not read my previous review can read over here what a good suite Quick Office have provided us to edit and create word documents and excel spreadsheets on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

But what if you are the savvy folks who would like to edit documents that are stored on the cloud such as Google Docs and Box.net? or my favorite application Dropbox?

The current version of Quickoffice allows you to do that!

      Qocms_6

I am an extensive user of both Google Docs and Dropbox so QuickOffice Connect is great and simple to use. Just sign in to your Google Account and your Dropbox account and you can download and edit documents from these cloud storage!

      Opera for iPhone approved!Shock!

When i heard that Opera is sending their browser for the iPhone for proposal, my thoughts is that there is a 75% chance that it will get shoot down

But it didn’t and surprisingly its free! Do give it a try and tell me what you think.

From my initial experiment it is pretty snappy. Does not load up as fast as Safari, but its multitouch zoom is damn responsive.

iPad:Will Microsoft Office be killed by iWork

It would seem that if i am Microsoft, I would be worried about how when the iPad really takes off and everyone has an iPad how people will actually shift to using iWorks instead of iPad.

But it also means that this might present a good opportunity to spread their tentacles to apple’s customers as well.

Microsoft Office really is one of the main profit drivers for the company and based on past experience alot of software took off because of the network effect form when every one use the same device.

When everyone owns an iPad, iWork enables them to do what Office does. Will it become a new standard in wordprocessing and spreadsheeting? there is a possibility there.

Microsoft will need to react carefully here.

The unified inbox:What it will mean

An email by Steve Jobs answering to a question if we can expect a universal mailbox on the iPhone.

      His answer? “Yep.”

This could be big for alot of us who do not care if our mail is from exchange, gmail or hotmail. We want them to be viewed like one mail box. If you are that kind of guy then its good to be excited.

Nested Task List for iPhone: Action Lists Review

Firstly thank you Charles for being kind enough to extend a beta copy of Action Lists for me to do this review.

So far i have the chance to investigate 2 Task Management Software:

      1. Appigo ToDo [Review Here >>]
      2. eToDo [Review Here >>]

For sure, these are not the only lists around and the fact that the competition is so hot means there is only one winner here, which is you the consumer!

Action Lists is brought to you by Daze End Software, you may have come across another of its software which is ListMaker and this one is working on the same formula as List Maker. In fact you can say that action Lists is building on the same formula as List Maker.

Action Lists, like most task management applications on iPhone enables you to follow the GTD Workflow by David Allen but for me, it can be much more than that.

      How much does it cost?

There is a free version for you to try that is FREE. However, it only enables you to create a limited number of tasks and projects.

The paid application cost USD9.99, which is the same cost as Appigo Todo and Things.

When you cost that much, you gotta be as competitive as them. Here we will see if it measures up.

      How does it work?

Action Lists does task management according to the GTD workflow, but you have the flexibility to do it in alot of ways.

Typically you start off by doing a sweep to collect any thing that you can think of. Any thoughts that translates to actionable tasks will go into the Inbox.

Task entry is similar to Appigo ToDo in that you can use a Quick Add button to add a task without detail specifications. But most would prefer to use the detail entry screen.

      Here you can enter the

      1. description of your task
      2. start date of the task
      3. end date of the task
      4. notes for the task
      5. context/categories of the task and
      6. which project it belongs to
      7. set task to repeating

whatever a good todo list have, Action Lists have it for you. You can specify your own contexts and later you can filter by them.

The repeating task is abit special. You can set them to continous repeat, and the tasks will be generated either when the day have been reached, or when the task have been completed.

the options that you can have for repeating tasks

the options that you can have for repeating tasks

I find this to necessary in the past to have the task recur on its own when the day comes but i realise that doing this, you can very likely litter your todo list should you fall off the to do list bandwagon and attempt to hop back on.

The preferred method will be to recur when you have complete the task. Either way, once you marked a task completed, a new recur task is added to the Inbox

new recurring task is in inbox

This is abit different but its Action Lists way to make sure that all new task is handled at Inbox level. some people will like this, some will not.

      Nested Projects

When you are organizing your tasks in your inbox, if the task needs more than 1-2 steps to be handled, you will create a Project to group them together.

This is where Action Lists differs from all task list on the market. Action Lists enables you to have unlimited projects within projects and there will alot of folks who appreciate this as you can really group your tasks by:

      1. Personal and Work
      2. Strategic Goals
      3. Area of Responsibilities
      4. Project Milestones
      5. Small Projects

I used to want this nested feature alot as i think it makes alot of sense. Even the Desktop ToDoList that i have created based on Nested Tree List. People that are in software development would have use Microsoft Project and it enables you to have nested task. If you look at your life as one big project then having nested list will really help.

first level has 2 projects. we go into work

first level has 2 projects. we go into work

second level have 3 area of responsibilities. we go into the first area of responsibilities

second level have 3 area of responsibilities. we go into the first area of responsibilities

third level have 2 more projects. we go into the btm project

third level have 2 more projects. we go into the btm project

      fourth level.the tasks

      fourth level.the tasks

Not having it is not end of the world. In fact most people will just make do with 2 levels: the first level being your Area of Responsibilities be it Project A, Being a good family man and the second level being your Project milestones to achieve that area of responsibility.

Task Status and Doing the Task via Context

How you perform the “Do It” after “Organzing it” will be based on 2 things: the Status of the task and the Context.

setting the status will determine whether the task shows up in action lists

setting the status will determine whether the task shows up in action lists

When defining the task you can select the status.

Setting the Task to Waiting will cost the task to pop up at the Waiting Tab (notice the increase in number badge indicating the number of waiting task) for me this is good as it really provides a clear seperation of tasks that are currently waiting. Currently with Appigo ToDo, i have it as one of my Tags and while i have said Appigo toDo main problem is that you need to go into the tags to see how many unfinish task you have. With Action Lists you don’t have this problem.

set status to waiting will show task up at waiting tab

set status to waiting will show task up at waiting tab

The Same goes with Someday. Once you decide to do a Someday task, just switch the status to Active or Next Action

As i have said, you hop on over to Action Lists Tab to go through your context to see your next action.

contexts provides the navigation depending on your current location/person you are with

contexts provides the navigation depending on your current location/person you are with

You will note that there aren’t alot of task queued here. Why is that? This is because only task set to Next Action Status will appear here!

Its a novel way of filtering away all the freaking task and only show what you have to do next.

There is abit of a problem here. So lets say you completed a task, what you need to do next is go to the Projects tab and go to that particular project and set the next task status to Next Action from Active.

what happens when your task is so deeply nested inside?

This is where Task Queue comes in. Touch the blue arrow next to each project folder and you will see the option “Queue Next Actions“.

Toggle it on and after you finish one next action, it will immediately set the next earliest due task to Next action from Active. This may not work well if you have tasks that have dependency not based on time of completion. the jury is still out if this performs well enough

auto queue the next task to process

auto queue the next task to process

      Synchronize and backup to ToodleDo

Action Lists enables you to back up your tasks and folders to Toodledo. I have not tested how well this works since my ToodleDo syncs with Appigo ToDo but i have a feeling it will be another case that ToodleDo will act as a backup rather than allow you to use it both online and on your iPhone.

Do tell me your experience with syncing.

enter your toodledo info to sync.

enter your toodledo info to sync.

      Where to improve upon

This App have alot of potential i feel. However here are some things that they need to iron out.

Full Calendar selection – We cannot rely on the roller to select the date! As we are setting dates, we want to see clearly which day of the week or which weekday we set upon. Using a roller selector is not good for this.

      rolling datepicker in Action Lists

      rolling datepicker in Action Lists

      ToDos calendar date picker implementation

      ToDo's calendar date picker implementation

More Description details – from the picture below you will see that its very difficult to tell at one glance what you need to do. you will have to go into the task itself. I feel this needs to be expanded

Notice that there are truncation that will hinder a quick review of task. you will need to go in to know more.

Notice that there are truncation that will hinder a quick review of task. you will need to go in to know more.

      Conclusion

On the whole a very good to do list i feel. Does everything the competition has and a very niche and competitive feature in Nested Projects. Fix the problems that i mention and its well worthed the price.

For one that have program a todo list, i can truely appreciate this product and its difficulties. We hope that the next 1 month users will give ample feedbacks to increase the stability of the software. Appigo Todo have this problem for all versions, due to the complexity of to do lists in general.

so do contribute and highlight the issues to make this a good todo list!
