Check and Send SMS anywhere–Singapore Telco should have done this ions ago!

I am not sure about you guys but I do find it pointless that we used to

  1. received an sms
  2. flipped open our hand phone to check
  3. achingly type on our T9 keypad to return the phone message

Why can’t we check our SMS on the desktop? Why can’t we check our SMS through a web portal, received a notification like how we did on a facebook portal.

Well finally, AT&T came up with such a solution at the end of a period where the SMS is going extinct due to data messaging applications

To celebrate the opening of their new AT&T Foundry in Palo Alto, AT&T is talking about some of the ambitious projects that they and their partner developers have been cooking up. One of the most interesting so far is AT&T Messages, which attempts to make all of your messages, voicemails, and call logs accessible from multiple devices.

Their cloud communications concept sounds quite a bit like the messaging half of Google Voice, but AT&T Messages has a few distinct advantages. One big one is the fact that it integrates with your existing AT&T phone number without any extra legwork. Any message sent to an existing AT&T number gets pushed into the cloud, where it’s viewable from any other compatible device.

Another thing: while Google Voice does an excellent job of making text messages and voicemails viewable on nearly anything with a web connection, it simply can’t deal with MMS messages. AT&T Messages plays with multimedia messages just fine, meaning that users who bounce between devices won’t have to live without all the funny cat pictures their friends send them.

Send your Google Plus Feeds to your RSS Reader

I really like to aggregate everything that I want to be informed in my RSS reader of choice Google Reader.

Now that we have a new social aggregator in Google Plus wouldn’t it be great if we can aggregate that in the RSS reader as well?

Ghacks here shows you how you can do that using this plusfeed.appspot.com service.

Harlequin–why use DRM on e-books when it can be cracked in 30 seconds?

Amazon and Barnes and Noble’s ebook sales have surpass their traditional book sales. Borders have filed for bankruptcy for not being able to take advantage of this digital publishing revolution.

I really admire the strategies Amazon have taken. Even more so the reaction Barnes and Noble carried out because of that. In my opinion Barnes and Noble could eventually still die off but their implementation and the direction they have taken to use Android as their main digital console, together with cheap pricing have been right.

Still, the decision to whether put DRM on books vary from publisher to publisher for Barnes and Noble. The format used by Amazon forces DRM.

I lived in a part of the world where piracy is rampant and most people do not care about copyrights and do not take the cost of software acquisition into their equation.

For them, it is so easy to get digital books even with DRM removed. That is why I think what Harlequin stated in this article makes a lot of sense.

The focus is on delivering the other aspect but treat piracy as something that would happen. Focus on a differential pricing model to turn as much of the demand into actual sales.

Delicious have died. What should I do now?

Ok this is a freaking waste of time! The worst thing that a user of a cloud app hates most is the service having to cease from operation.

That means you need to

  1. Look for an alternative solution/services
  2. Think about how to export and import your data

I have been using Delicious as my main bookmarking services. Sure it wasn’t always the best but it sure serve a very good purpose.

Now they have to do this to me!

Never fear, cause there are alternatives.

I was particularly introduced to Diigo.com which look like a great service by Xiaowen. The great upside is that it has smartphone apps for iPhone and Android.

But that’s not the only option. WorkAwesome have an Awesome list of replacements for Delicious that you can explore.

Some of them are

  1. Historio.us
  2. Licorize
  3. Pinboard.in
  4. Diigo
  5. Google Bookmarks
  6. Blinklist

Smart Credit Cards and Smartphone payment coming soon

We are probably approaching the age where you will not have to bring out credit cards but rely on your smartphone for payment.

My issue with this is that it will be a whole new world of fraud and convenience.

Card 2.0 is the computing platform powering the new Citi cards that re-write the magnetic strip depending on whether you want to spend you cash or your rewards points. The technology fits snugly in your credit card, is waterproof, has a battery life upwards of four years, allows multiple accounts on a single card, and even can be used to require a PIN before displaying the card number.

Companies are experimenting with a number of payment methods. One method is through the use of NFC chips, or near-field communication chips. With embedded NFC chips inside a phone or phone case, users can either tap or wave their phones in front of an NFC reader and pay for goods that way rather than having to swipe a credit or debit card. Another method, which AT&T is experimenting with, involves carrier billing. Like single log-ins such as Amazon’s or Paypal’s single ID, users can pay for online goods with their cell phone number and charges will appear on their phone bills.

Problem Yesterday Morning

I would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused yesterday. The site was down for 3/4 of the day due to some problems with the WordPress issues. Most of the problems are resolved and viewers can continue to view articles.

I would be fixing the other problems today.
