Swype Virtual Keyboard really rocks!

I mentioned in my previous article on finding this keyboard software called Swype for Windows Mobile and Android that redefines how we input text on a small device.

I would like to give another shout out to the developers of this. It really rocks! It is so smart that most of the time it gets what i want to type. of course im still not used to it and it has made my typing on iPod Touch worse (i kept thinking the iPod Touch can kept up with the input speed of how well i do on my Windows Mobile with Swype that i kept forgeting to put spaces)

Swype: Best virtual keyboard for Windows Mobile and Android?

I got an old O2 Atom Life Windows Mobile phone and have been trying to get around the idea of not using a stylus on a 2.8 inch resistive screen.

I am really good with the stylus either using Block Recoginizer,Transcriber but i can’t figure out why we had to make use of stylus last time before the iPhone comes about. It is such a hassle when you are commuting in the middle of  a train station and you need to send a text and you have to pull out your stylus.

That is why with the advancement of virtual keyboard we hope to see some really cool and functional virtual keyboard. The iphone’s virtual keyboard have been one of the best. Very responsive and good for me.

However, on a resistive screen its a different matter.

Here is what a small company presented on TechCrunch 50 and i was more than impress by the video to download Swype to try on my Atom Life.

Take a look at how it works.

When i first tried it, it felt real awkward. But slowly i see the benefits of it. The intelligence of this small software really picks up words fast. Whats more if you use fingers on the small resistive screen on my Atom Life it actually work pretty well!

Here are some tips and tricks taken off Swype’s tips and tricks:

This video shows the basic way how to input text. What i like about this is that if you don’t get used to writing all the way by swyping you can still use a very functional virtual keyboard.

What if you encounter words like “balloon” or “good” with double letters? no problem.

This one shows a very fast way of Capitalizing your words. Never thought about doing that!

How to put your comma and fullstop fast.

This one shows the auto correct functionality. its easy if you have a friends name like Balakrishnan. Just type the name Balakrishnan and it auto goes into the dictionary. the next time you swype it the intellisense will be able to recognize it .

So where can you get it? The folks at XDA Developers have managed to port it. Do give it a try and comment how is your experience with it.

HTC Phone 3G to Wifi Tethering gives Windows Mobile phone users another option

I mentioned that you can tether your 3G data connection via numerous methods for different phones.

However, the option for Windows Mobile phone is very expensive! WMWifiRouter charges a bomb for something others give for free. But HTC have decided that consumers should have this service for all their future handsets (FREE!) and in this topic by XDA developers there is active discussion and you can download the HTC software to try on your phone.

Mind you, not all windows mobile phones will work. Do give it a try:

Old version WMWifiRouter version 0.91 Free and still works!

Download info for WMWifiRouter 0.91 found!

I blog recently about how you can turn many of your smartphones into wireless routers to provide some fast internet access.

For windows mobile there is a solution called WMWifiRouter that is very expensive. Apparently, it started off as a free tool for people, but the developers see that they can sell this solution for quite a fair bit of money. So now it is a very expensive application.

I came across this article that seems to link to a MegaUpload of an old 0.91 version that was a freeware. I have not tried it out but if you guys have do tell me if it works on your current phones.

EDIT: It does work! with the ICS Install i am able to get my old Atom Life to  talk to the iPod Touch!

Hack Time:Boosting your Windows Mobile Phone’s performance

WMExpert’s Malatesta have come up with a speed boosting article for your Windows Mobile Phone. Do note that you need to probably sacrifice available space for performance improvement. There is no free lunch there.

Speed tweaks

So you like your current setup on your Windows phone but are looking to add that extra oomph to give it just a little extra speed and fluidity? Well, look no further as I’ll share some of my favorite tweaks to help get your phone running as zippy as the processor can handle.

Most of these tweaks will not even require us to alter directly the registry. Instead, we will rely on various third party programs to do that for us. This will allow a method to record our changes as well as a quick way to “undo” anything you find unsatisfactory.

Oh and none of this involves over-clocking the processor—I’m just not a fan of that technique.

Regardless of your ROM build (custom or official), OS type, or device make, so long as you are running a Windows professional OS, you will be able to apply these changes. For the sake of audience reach, we will be using a Sprint Touch Pro 2 running a custom WM6.5.1 ROM.

Read on for the only guide you’ll need as I reveal all I know on this topic.

First and foremost I should point out that I don’t consider any of these changes absolutely necessary to enjoy your Windows phone — in fact with my roughly six WM6.5 devices, I only have done this to the one I use the most: the Touch Pro 2. Still, if your device set up perfectly or you just flashed a new ROM, taking the 15 minutes to do these changes will give a noticeable boost in speed.

Second, nothing is free. The big trade off in doing these changes is a reduction in available program memory, i.e. RAM. Personally, I don’t care about available RAM. Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5 do a great job of managing memory and as long as you have more than 50MB of free RAM after a boot, I would not worry about it.

Still, to keep this in perspective, these changes also don’t consume a huge amount of memory either. Just be aware that’s how some of these tweaks work: we’re allocating RAM for larger amounts of available cache.

Third, a lot of what is below is redundant as many of these program overlap, so don’t feel you have to all that is listed below. Fact is, whether you do one or all of these tweaks, you will see a difference in performance.

Free 3D Games gets added to the Zune HD: iPod be careful now

I never have been a big follower of the development for the Zune HD, but since discovering this video, i realise that Microsoft might have a serious product to compete with the PSP and the iPod Touch in the gaming arena here.

Its got better graphics and touted to have better sound quality (not hard to beat, Apple have some really bad sound chips) But the screen size is so small! I wonder how you are gonna enjoy it without speakers as well.

I think this might be an infant step but get more developers on board Microsoft. Then we can start talking

Weekly Tech What the Fark:USD80 Netbook Menq EasyPC!

I told my friends and colleagues that if you wanna buy a netbook, iphone or entertainment device you will be best to wait for 4 months.

They don’t listen to me like i am some geek idiot.

The next 4-5 months is gonna be big and this rather funny video is gonna see how probably chome OS and Android is gonna cannablize the whole portable device market.

How the market players react will be interesting. If you buy now u would probably think why the heck i pay so much for something like that. I feel like an idiot sometimes buying my MSI Wind at SGD854. The cost of being a first adopter

Menq, a Chinese company who aims to provided the cheapest laptops they possible has a new 7-inch, 800×480 resolution notebook called the EasyPC E790. You’ll notice in the video below that the notebook is somewhat slow but that’s because it uses an ARM9 processor. For possibly $10-$20 more, the laptop-maker could squeeze an ARM Cortex A8 processor and yield a considerably faster web experience.
