Another ubiquitous file sharing/backup service:Soonr

How you can assess your word, excel, powerpoint, movies and pdf documents both on your computer, blackberry, android phone, ipod touch and iphone

Joining, SugarSync,Dropbox is another company Soonr, that aims to provide data backup and data on the go for the business worker.

Looking at how the website is set up you will know that they ain’t targeting folks like us but really business users, SME users and the likes.

Why would you use this?

Simply, there are files we do not know where we will need to view. Such as reference PDF, word and excel documents, even photos.

The problem with uploading to a site for sharing or backing up is that you need to have the intention that there is a possibility that you will need to assess it while you are on the go or accross your home and office. You do not always know that

What you do then, is create a folder dump that you put things by category and should you need to access it, you can have assess to it whether its on your iphone, ipod touch, black berry, android phone or another desktop pc with internet assess.

The positive aspect is that for Soonr, you can span it across 2 or more pc, on your iPhone, through your mobile web browser or your web browser. All of them link to one account.

Costing

Like Dropbox,Syncplicity and Sugarsync, the BASIC PACKAGE is FREE! That will give you 2GB of online backup, used by 2 users and up to 3 projects. That is really the bare minimum.

The premium account cost USD 7.95 and that will get you:

  • 10GB backup
  • File versioning
  • up to 3 users
  • Unlimited projects
  • Team Drive online disk drive

Not so much of a big improvement except that you have unlimited projects

The pro account will set you back USD 19.95 per month

  • 40GB backup
  • File Versioning
  • 5 users
  • Unlmited projects
  • Team Drive online disk drive

Choosing where to backup

Choosing where to backup

here you will need to specify where you want to house your backup. Like my other services (I use Dropbox,Syncplicity and SugarSync) I house my backups in a central repository where i list Soonr as a sub folder.

You will also be asked where to get your contacts from. Since my contacts in MS outlook is empty i just let it check to see what happens

Getting Connected

When not connected you will see a red icon in your system tray,

Soonr Not Connected

When connected you will see that it is green in color,

this will stay connected even when your system starts up. unless you stops it yourself

Backup up files

When we have done all that we can start backing up our files so that we can view them in our other platforms and computers.

Backing up files to Soonr Desktop folder

What we will do here is drag 2 pdf books on productivity into the Soonr desktop folder. As you see, when you open up the Soonr client you will see that it is uploading to the Soonr server.

One thing i notice is backup takes some time. So you must be patient and not expect your files to be immediately assessable.

Viewing on the web front end

You will not get the chance to assess your files on your desktop all the time, that is why the web front end is really good. You will be able to assess and download your files from there.

Soonr Web Dashboard

When you login to your web front end you will be able to see

  • Your projects for sharing with others
  • Your computers link to this account
  • Your files and folders

You will observe that files not completely uploaded is greyed out.

Viewing on your iPhone

Good news for iPhone and iPod Touch folks is that there is an Soonr software. So do go search and download it at the App Store. IT IS FREE.

This is how it looks like. Compare to GoodReader here which i highly recommend, this is not a good pdf reader, but hey its free! Lived with it haha!

Viewing on Android and Blackberry phones

Now I am quite sure they don’t have an Android and Blackberry application, but through their mobile web page link  https://vip.soonr.com you are able to assess a really kick ass front end.

Conclusion

This is another one of those apps that do file syncing and it does a decent job, although its not as flexible as Dropbox or SugarSync. Nevertheless, I run all 4 of these services on my desktop, so i get 8 gb all together.

One thing to note. If you are a privacy nut, please read its terms and conditions carefully. I have not explored it but do note not to store your most sensitive projects (that will get you fired) and your most personal information in these kind of storage.

I give this a very good rating for the overall package, especially the very well done mobile front end. This would mean Blackberry and Android users have a good ubiquitous file sharing application

Thanks for the write up. I thought I would inform you that since you wrote the article we have introduced a native Android version and we also have an launcher application that will give you one click access on the Blackberry.

Soonr is used as the backend for many backup services. It’s one of the only ones that provides continuous backup (almost real time) with immediate restore for those times when you delete something by accident and need to get it back FAST.

Hi Song, All the best to your venture. i believe that backup services should focus on making it ubquitous so that it lowers users switching cost.

Android looks to have a strong future. investing in creating an app for it goes a long way.

You have strong competition from SugarSync, Dropbox,Syncplicity. So i think u guys would really need to focus on really making sure our data is safe.

    Best Regards.
